Images of America – The Great Dayton Flood of 1913

A little over a year from today, Dayton will mark the 100 year anniversary of the great 1913 Dayton Flood.

In this book from the Images of America series, Trudy Bell uses historical photos and eyewitness reports of the Great 1913 Flood in Dayton, Ohio. The 1913 Flood literally reshaped Dayton, leading to the Miami Conservancy District and changing forever the way Dayton interacts with the five rivers that define the region.

Oakwood: The Far Hills

One of the very first great books about Dayton I came across as a young man was a small hardback called Oakwood: The Far Hills by Bruce W. Ronald.  This book recounts the founding and early history of the small suburb of Dayton called Oakwood.  The book, which Mr. Ronald authored in collaboration with his wife – former Oakwood High School history teacher Virginia Ronald, recounts how Oakwood transformed from pristine farmland on the ridge above and to the south of the settlement of Dayton into a uniquely American example of the suburban environment typical of the early 2oth century.
